Hmmm... anything I don't like directly correlates to an area where I am weak, therefore, the things I don't like are actually what I need so I embrace them... Pull-ups, supine row.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR SPORTS & FITNESS BACKGROUND:
I grew up as a competitive swimmer and alpine skiier. As an adult I went on to become a PSIA Rocky Mountain Division ski instructor in Telluride, Colorado and 9x Ironman, 8x Ironman finisher.
HOW DID YOU FIRST HEAR ABOUT SCORCH?:
I knew Liz Lowe and worked out under her direction at Ignite 360. I stayed in touch with her after she left Ignite and hounded her until SCORCH announced its opening.
TAKE US BACK TO YOUR FIRST DAY OF SCORCH... HOW DID YOU FEEL? HOW DO YOU COMPARE IT TO WORKOUTS TODAY?:
Ugh... my first day! I knew it would be tough but that's what signed on for. I hadn't worked out for months (only running) and I felt every muscle later that day. It wasn't as tough as I anticipated. It was fun and went by quick! I loved the workout and I knew the muscle soreness would go away. I knew I needed this. I went four days that week and by the fourth day my body started to feel good again.
Comparing it to today... I work harder than I did the first day. I am stronger than I was the first day. I am healthier than I was the first day. My body still gets tired and my muscles will be sore but it feels SO GOOD! I have a much stronger focus and intensity during my workouts today than in the beginning.
WHAT SORT OF CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN YOUR BODY, HEALTH AND FITNESS SINCE STARTING AT SCORCH (BEFORE/AFTER)?:
My body is stronger than it has ever been, ever! My overall fitness is better than it's ever been. I actually feel healthy & strong enough to start Ironman training again only this time, I have a much stronger foundation thanks to SCORCH!
WHAT SORT OF CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED OUT OF TAKING ON SOMETHING LIKE SCORCH THAT WERE TOTALLY UNEXPECTED?:
I am not a "gym" person. I don't like doing weights. I get bored easily. I like being outside. What amazes me is how much I love working out at SCORCH! Because we are moving through Endurance, Strength & Power, I am
constantly moving. It is obvious how the structure of this program benefits everyone from someone just wanting to be in shape to the seasoned athlete. I have unfortunately had many injuries from overuse, bike & ski crashes and because of the training at SCORCH, I am able to move and do things that I hadn't been able to do. I love that the SCORCH program is designed to prevent further injury and help strengthen my injured areas. What is most unexpected for me is how much I love being in this environment.. in a gym, doing weights, not bored!
WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO SOMEONE WHO IS JUST STARTING OUT WITH SCORCH OR IS TOO AFRAID TO TRY IT?
The people who come to SCORCH are a very special group. They are kind, inviting, supportive and will instantly make you feel that you are a part of the Scorch Nation. Each and every one of us remember what it was like on our first day so we all want to make the new person feel welcomed. Zac Ross will be the first to introduce himself! You will learn that many of us have nicknames that we have earned. Liz will protect you like a Momma Bear and make sure you are doing everything correctly, as will all the other trainers. If you have any kind of injury, the workout will be modified for you. At the end of the workout, don't be surprised when everyone knows your name and wants to know when you are coming back! There are no "clicks"- we all get partnered with one another at some point. Bottom like... we all work hard and we all have FUN!
